In Search For Power

July 11, 2008 by

Henk van Ess

My name is Henk van Ess. A few days ago, I lived a normal life as an internet speaker, writer and consultant. Now I am also a battery dealer. What happened?

I don’t sell gadgets. Never did. Now I do. Something went terribly wrong. Here’s what happened. I’m always in a quest for battery juice because I travel a lot. Yes, I’m that pathetic person that bought a heavy block of metal so I can work for 9 hours on my Macbook Air. For even smaller devices I bought the Philips Power 2 Go, a piece of plastic (PDF, 256 Kb) that kept my iPhone 1.1.4 alive.

The new 3G iPhone is great. But fast HDSPA drains the battery. That’s not Apple’s fault: all major phone manufacturers have to deal with that.

So I plugged my new iPhone into the Power 2 Go. It worked fine. Yesterday I left a small input cable of the Power 2 Go somewhere in a coffeeshop. Suddenly the clunky battery charger was useless. Somewhat angry I posted in Linkedin: ‘who brings me the smallest rechargable battery for the iPhone 3G without silly cases’.

I wanted it to be certified by Apple. And the product should not explode like Chinese fireworks.

Someone told me I had to contact a manufacturer that works closely with China BAK Battery, a NASDAQ company.

The manufacturer asked C-BAK to build a sturdy battery with no cables.  I asked for a sample and I liked the specs:

- it’s the smallest external battery with 1750 mAh in the world for the iPhone (2G and 3G) that has no cables
- you don’t need any cables when in use
- you can slide the battery in your pocket, it’s only 6 cm high
- the battery doubles the life of your iPhone

Almost twenty friends from Europe asked me to buy the battery for them. So I thought, oh well, let’s order some more. But I hated all the paperwork. So I decided, let’s open a little web shop and my friends can order the thing themselves. Then the dealer asked: don’t you want to become reseller for The Netherlands? We need you to order at least 100 units. I calculated that it would be cheaper to have hundreds of batteries shipped, not 20. So suddenly the question rose: do I want to became the European dealer for this brand new product? Fast forward to the kitchen table.

This morning I asked my pregnant wife for her opinion. ,,Should I accept the offer? I think it’s strange to sell batteries for a person like me. I don’t want to become a battery guy.”

My wife said: ,,But you buy batteries all the time. Don’t you think it’s time to sell some, especially one that you like yourself?”

She’s so funny.

If you want to be one of the first in Europe with a special 3G iPhone rechargable battery, just like me, go for it. Since I have plans for world domination, I deliver worldwide. Well, not me, but Thea and Debby – two nice ladies from my office in Amersfoort. If you’re from the press and want to test the battery, mail me.

So I did it. I’m even a worldwide dealer of batteries now. But only on this website. If you invite me as a speaker or consultant, I’ll deny that I sell batteries. I will refuse to open my suitcase. I won’t say a thing when you ask me: ‘hey, that’s a nice battery, where did you get it?’

Hmm .. the sentence where you say that The 3G JUICE is cheaper than the other battery’s on the market is not true. your battery is 35 euro’s, the other’s are 50 us dollars thats 28 euro…

    :)

  16. admin on July 16th, 2008 10:04 am

@Menno: 3GJUICE is the cheapest with this specs: $45. The other batteries are 1000 mAh or 1300 mAh, not 1770 mAh. That difference of 70% will make you smile. But thanks anyway, I edited the claim and added’ ‘the cheapest with this specs’ I’m sure when I get some international wholesalers the price will drop. 17. admin on July 16th, 2008 10:06 am

@rutger I asked the EVD to have a look at the documents and showed them to some lawyers. So safety first.

  18. Rutger on July 16th, 2008 1:30 pm

In theory what would happen if my iPhone gets broken because of this Battery? Will the iPhone guarantee cover it? Is Apple liable of the defect? Or does it just mean you’re not liable as a seller?

  19. admin on July 16th, 2008 8:35 pm

@Rutger. Ah, liability. This was for me the main reason to think hard about this adventure. But my lawyer assured me : the product output voltage/current is designed per Apple specification, it will not make damage to your iPhone/ iPod It has only one contact part with the iPhone/ iPod- the connector which is also specifically ordered from Apple’s specified vendor (only one vendor, guess that’s called monopoly). So there will be no concern for mechanical part either imho.

If there is solid evidence that our product damages your iPhone, I will cover the material cost for the repair. However, we will not be responsible for any mistake of not using our product properly or any damage caused by accident loss (like dropping to the ground, bended, etc.). The usual stuff I guess. Hope I took away some of your theoratical concerns .

    Thanks,

He’s the kind of guy that travels with huge stacks of batteries – so that he can work for nine hours on his Macbook Air. 22. Joram Oudenaarde on July 22nd, 2008 11:07 am

    Hello :)

That’s a really nice battery! The only thing I’ve always wondered is does it charge the battery of the iPhone, or does it work like a second battery?

    Meaning:
Does it charge the battery, so you don’t have to walk around with an extra battery hanging under your iPhone? I’ve seen similar options with the old iPods, but that was an extender-pack, which required it to have it hooked up to your iPod at all times (not very ideal).

Other than that; pretty sleak looking, and I can’t wait to get one if I ever get my iPhone ;)

  23. admin on July 22nd, 2008 11:25 am

    Hi Joram,

We decided the 3G JUICE to be a charger of the iPhone battery. This enables you that double life we’re raving about on this site all the time. When the battery is turning red, click the 3G JUICE under your 3G/2G iPhone or any 30 pins iPod and you can start smiling again: it charges your iPhone.

  24. Joram Oudenaarde on July 22nd, 2008 11:31 am

    Speedy response, thanks!

That sounds pretty neat… I guess the green light of the 3Gjuice acts as the indicator that tells you if the iPhone battery is full right?

Good luck with the website though… looks like you have a great product on hands :)

  25. admin on July 22nd, 2008 11:36 am

The green light shows you that the 3G JUICE is still working. The iPhone shows either in the right upper corner the loading icon when in use, or the big battery (with a green bar) if you start working.

  26. miguel on August 2nd, 2008 11:50 pm

Is it possible to charge the 3G JUICE from a wall outlet, or it has to be done with a computer?

  27. admin on August 3rd, 2008 10:40 am

It’s computer only, but with a simple USB-charger you can reload the 3G JUICE from your wall outlet (but if you plan to do that, do you really need 3G JUICE? If you are with an outlet, you can use your iPhone cable).

The USB charger of Apple will do the trick too, but if you don’t have one, buy one.

It will set you back another $6.99, http://www.amazon.com/Coby-CA-80-Adapter-Charger-Players/dp/B000OX0IGO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1217754440&sr=1-1

  28. miguel Suarez-Pierra on August 3rd, 2008 4:18 pm

Thank you. So, I could use the Apple USB Power Adapter that came with my iPhone 3G. Right?
BTW, I already ordered the 3G JUICE.

  29. Michiel on August 4th, 2008 12:26 am

    Hi Henk,

Could you please tell me what time it takes the 3G Juice to fully charge the iPhone?

    Regards,

    Michiel

  30. admin on August 4th, 2008 6:43 am

It depends on several factors: the temperature, what you do with you iPhone while loading and if you charged the 3G Juice for 100%. We ran several tests with

    a. iPhone had 30% energy left
    b. 3G Juice was fully loaded
    c. temp was 25 celsius

It took 3 hrs to a full charge.

  31. admin on August 4th, 2008 7:54 am

    @Miguel: right.. !

    Hi,

Yes you can sell them on eBay, it’s your property. But people are not fond of second hand batteries..so we will sent you six seperate boxes.

The New York Times article says you thought of a couple more businesses before, but you decided not to pursue them. What were those? Thanks.

  38. 3gjuice on October 21st, 2008 5:10 am

    Dear Robert,

The first idea came in a plane to a conference, far away from home.
,,Wouldn't it be possible to have a device that shows me everything
that I can see on my tv at home on the screen of my hotelroom?”. Three
years later, there was the Slingbox (http://www.slingbox.com). The second
idea filled my need to browse the internet fast and was a device that
starts your pc in 2 seconds with a simple browser. But hybernation and
the iPhone made this little idea obsolete. I wrote the software though
    :)

  42. Wixar on February 12th, 2009 10:46 am

Congratulations Henk. Your product (yes, it can be said its yours) is making waves all over the planet. Your personal touch and outstanding customer service speak volumes! So many great reviews, not only for the product but also for you support/service. Well done.

I've been searching for a product to keep my iPhone 3G alive for longer and I've finally found it. I've yet to place my order, don't have my card details to hand, but will do as soon as I get a chance today.

I do use a case for iPhone, but I don't think I can wait much longer for the new version as you mentioned above. However, I would be interested if you release a higher powered version – so please keep me in the loop.

And if you need a UK based reseller – do let me know ;) lol

Once again, all the best wishes.

    Dear Wixar

Thanks for the nice words. Currently we're working (= ahum, I must
say, I am working) on a lot of three new products:

the smallest Macbook Air external battery in the world,
a smaller 3GJUICE for non mobile warriors
Major Mojo, a bigger 5400 mAh battery for the iPhone (and G1) which
HAS a cable (although I hate cables).

And yes, we need resellers in UK and Canada, so for that mail your
    brilliant plans to reseller@3gjuice.com

  44. Kevin Young on May 15th, 2009 10:25 am

I live in the UK, I ordered a Major Mojo on Friday 24 April. It is now Friday 15 May, some three weeks later and the goods have not arrived. I have asked for a refund and was promised one on Wednesday (13 May) this week. I was advised by 'Henk' that the refund was being processed by PayPal, however as you will all no doubt know, when PayPal processes a refund from a company, you (as the purchaser) get and email to advise you that a refund has been processed. I have had NO email from Paypal to confirm this. The refund has not been actioned and I am still waiting.

My emails are being ignored. At first communication was good but now we have a problem they just do not want to know.

AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS OR YOU WILL LIVE TO REGRET IT LIKE I HAVE.

    Dear Kevin,

That's not good. We'll refund your money today. It's a pity you don;t
have the product and we lost the unit. We hope you are still prepared
to answer questions of the postal police in The Netherlands, so we can
    find out what happened?

Homer's Odyssey could be considered a song, since it an may other early epic tales are poetry, which may have been sung by bards. In particular, the portion where the men encounter the Cyclops illustrates the belief in the power of a name. By concealing his true name, and telling the Cyclops that his name was “no man” Odysseus wisely and slyly gets and maintains power to defeat the Cyclops.
I don't know, but it's likely that you'll find similar examples in Beowulf.
In the Gilbert and Sullivan light opera “The Pirates of Penzance or the Slave of Duty” the protagonist is bound a comically exaggerated sense of duty and by a contract which binds him in an apprenticeship until he reaches his 21st birthday. The problem is that he was born on February 29th, on leap year day. Oops. Hilarity ensues. (There is a video which includes Angela Lansbury, Linda Ronstadt, and Kevin Kline, which I highly recommend.)

Now, there is also a “downdraft” of wind blowing down from the top of the storm cloud towards the ground. A downdraft exists because of the large amounts of falling precipitation.

I bought a few sets of this. Have plugged them in for a month, couldn't really see the result since my bill for the two months were estimated figures, not the actual recorded.

Wondering if it works. Have plugged two of it, though some sites say one is enough but when I read the manual, they say you have to work out the maths to see whether one unit it enough. One unit supports up to 18000kW, which confuses me since another product given rating in kWh instead.

When using linear regression to fit the distribution this parameter is calculated simply as the slope of the linear fit to the logged data. The above panels show this analysis for two different version of the data. On the left, the data are restricted to only observations with, in the words of Lewis Richardson, “deadly quarrels.” That is, WikiLeaks events where a death occurred, which accounts for friendly, enemy, host nation and civilian deathsg. Interestingly, we find that for the KIA data the scaling parameter falls just outside the necessary range to be classified as a power-law.

A soul is termed atman in Hinduism. Now how do we remove dross impurities within our soul atman! By indulging in positive karma… good karma all the time… invoking positive thoughts all the time… we not only eradicated presence of negative karma from previous manifestations… we also improved our future… our manifest destiny!

The definition of God Almighty… definition of mind is best explained in sacred Bhagavad Gita of Hinduism! Various essays on my different websites would give you complete meanings of anything relating to Bhagavad Gita or Hinduism! The contents of Bhagavad Gita can never be understood literally… it needs reading in between the lines!
